Success and Ignorance

So Andrew Luck announces his retirement from the Colts. He explains that the years of injuries and pain that he experienced and the continuing possibility of more of the same was just not worth the impact on his health and family.

During his career, Luck suffered a lacerated kidney, a torn abdomen, torn cartilage, and a concussion.

So the fans booed him as he walked off the field for the last time. They did not applaud for the yeas of leadership he provided for the team. They did not applaud for the tremendous athletic ability he demonstrated through years at the QB position. They did not applaud for the years of wins and thrills he provided on the gridiron. There was no standing ovation for the four-time Pro Bowler! Luck said that it hurt walking off the field, hearing that from the “fans”.

I placed this post under success because of what the man contributed to NFL, to the sport, to the community, to the fans. This post is all about that!

It is a post about success, nothing short of success in so many dimensions!

Separately, I just have to say that there must be a tremendous amount of ignorance, tunnel vision, and just plain stupidity in Indianapolis, as demonstrated by the “fans” at last Saturdays preseason game. They enjoyed years of so much entertainment, thrills, and pride, courtesy of the team and Andrew Luck. All of that at the leadership of Andrew Luck! And that is how they send him off!

Good luck Andrew Luck… there are many of us that applaud your contribution to the NFL, the community, the sport, and the team!

Ain’t no 1st class in DC !!!!

Subject: Congress-Woman ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ On Her Way To Washington, DC

DEMOCRAT ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ SITTING IN ECONOMY CLASS GETS UP AND MOVES TO THE FIRST CLASS SECTION AND SITS DOWN.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT WATCHES HER DO THIS AND ASKS TO SEE HER TICKET.

SHE THEN TELLS THE CONGRESSWOMAN THAT SHE PAID FOR ECONOMY CLASS AND THAT SHE WILL HAVE TO SIT IN THE BACK.

OCASIO-CORTEZ REPLIES, “I’M A DEMOCRAT, I’M BEAUTIFUL,  I’M GOING TO DC AND I’M STAYING RIGHT HERE.”

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT GOES INTO THE COCKPIT AND TELLS THE PILOT AND THE CO-PILOT THAT THERE IS A YOUNG WOMAN SITTING IN FIRST CLASS, WHO BELONGS IN ECONOMY AND WON’T MOVE BACK TO HER SEAT.

THE CO-PILOT GOES BACK TO OCASIO-CORTEZ AND TRIES TO EXPLAIN THAT BECAUSE SHE ONLY PAID FOR ECONOMY SHE WILL HAVE TO LEAVE AND RETURN TO ECONOMY.

CORTEZ REPLIES, “I’M A DEMOCRAT, I’M BEAUTIFUL, I’M GOING TO DC AND I’M STAYING RIGHT HERE.”

THE CO-PILOT TELLS THE PILOT THAT HE PROBABLY SHOULD HAVE THE POLICE WAITING WHEN THEY LAND TO ARREST THE  CONGRESSWOMAN WHO WON’T LISTEN TO REASON.

THE PILOT SAYS, “I’LL HANDLE THIS, I’M MARRIED TO A LIBERAL.”

HE GOES BACK TO THE DEMOCRAT AND WHISPERS IN HER EAR, AND SHE SAYS, “OH, I’M SORRY.” AND GETS UP AND GOES BACK TO HER SEAT IN ECONOMY.

THE FLIGHT ATTENDANT AND CO-PILOT ARE AMAZED AND ASKED HIM WHAT HE SAID TO MAKE HER MOVE WITHOUT ANY FUSS.

“I TOLD HER, FIRST CLASS ISN’T GOING TO DC.”

Really ?

I spent way too much time completing the surgical center’s pre-op online patient information prior to recent shoulder surgery… pages!  All that information is available at my surgeons’ office and my family doc’s office, in the same city. But it is not about proximity. If the medical community would step into the tech age for record keeping and sharing, all those records, care, procedures, medications, etc., would be available to the medical community at large, without the duplicate records and paperwork. It is absurd.

I complained about this to the surgical center to no avail.  I registered a complaint in my surgeon’s office and their answer was the office and the surgical centers are not related facilities.

When the hell is the medical profession going to get real about central records on global servers?  That argument about proprietary / confidentiality does not stand.  Just look at global transactions made and information storage used by business and industry and banking and their customers, and suppliers across the web.  Do those businesses get hacked? It happens. Do they recover, yes!  Do they abandon global record keeping, transactions, and interfaces?  No!  They just get better at security!

And think of the advantages for the patient and physician:

  • A lot less paperwork in doc’s office.
  • New doc’s would know the patient’s entire medical history.
  • That history could be updated as necessary following patient visits and procedures.
  • Doc’s could see a patient’s script history before prescribing new/additional drugs.
  • Few patients show up with a complete memory of all procedures, exams, drugs, allergic reactions, etc. No need to know that, the information is in a data base.
  • I’m sure the medical and information technology community could add many more bullets to the above list.

Really?

Legends and Stories

This blog calls it’s stories, “log entries”.

Grandfather valued stories above all else.  He once said that our family histories are captured in legends and tales.  They keep our ancestors, our culture and our history alive.  We turn memories into stories, and if we don’t we lose them.  If the stories are gone , then the people are gone too.

Very Lucky !

I love  talking to my kids about their jobs.

They work for big companies. They have jobs with huge scopes.  They have gone through company relocation. They touch a lot of people — customers, employees peers, bosses.

I just ask how’s the job, how are things at work and just sit back and listen and appreciate their business sense, that they know and have skills that successfully influence customers, bosses, and co-workers, and have business competencies that help them be successful and that give them important leverage in their companies.

I am thankful and very lucky!
